Leadership Language

A leader is someone who helps others do much more than they have ever thought was possible. There are some defined leadership features, which give some people the opportunity to keep everything under their control. One of them is the ability to use leadership language that is the basis of effective communication and mutual understanding in different spheres, such as politics. The latter is a social phenomenon that needs special means of information exchange and the establishment of permanent links between its subjects much more than other social activities. One of the most striking examples of people possessing communicative power in the political sphere is Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi, the first female who was elected to be the Speaker of the House in the UAE parliament. This paper reviews two of a few Amal’s speeches. The first was a thankful speech delivered after her election as a parliamentary speaker. The second was given during the meeting connected with such phenomena as education and scientific research, which the government decided to develop and support, in the convention titled “ADEC’s PSQA Private Schools Orientation Forum 2015-2016” on May 4, 2015.

While analyzing both speeches, it is necessary to pay attention to such universal appeals as logos, ethos, and pathos. They reveal the speaker’s intentions and personality, in particular (Barrett, 2014). The first speech, which was examined for the presence of the previously mentioned aspects, is the Amal’s talk of gratitude. As for the logos, she refers to the logical elements such as citizens and public on whose behalf she acts. Here is the passage of the mentioned technique, “Hopes and ambitions of the citizens when debating; a balance between the demands of the public today” (Taher, 2015). In her speech, Amal also gives an example of Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak’s proud actions:

I would like to dedicate this nomination to Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation and Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and the women of the UAE (Taher, 2015).

The fact that she mentions it makes her more trustworthy and provides her with the credibility and loyalty of the audience. Moreover, such an apt reference demonstrates Amal’s competence and knowledge about other leaders.

In order to make a contact with listeners on the emotional level, Dr. Amal uses such appeal as pathos, which entails the emphasis on the emotions, moving descriptions or narratives. In this case, she tells about the soldiers who fought very bravely and underscores the audience’s need to be as courageous as those in the army. Here is the example passage, “Our brave soldiers who are gaining medals of honour on the battle field … We cannot forget that amidst the difficult political situation, our international” (Taher, 2015). Recalling the situation that is of the utmost importance for the society guarantees that the sympathy of the audience will be won.

Another Amal’s speech, which employs weighty speech appeals, is her talk at the forum where she advocated for the development of education. During her talk, the woman uses mostly the element of logos – an appeal to facts, “Global evidence continues to stress on the important role a parent plays in their child’s education” (“Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi,” 2015). In appealing to logic, relevant statistics was used to make an accent on the truthfulness of her words, “Private schools currently consist of 24 percent Emirati students; UAE’s vision by the year 2021” (“Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi,” 2015). Another piece of logos evidence is, “Out of the 124 schools that were inspected in the three cycles, 25 schools remain at the same grade level, 86 schools improved by at least one grade, and 13 disimproved by at least one grade” (“Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi,” 2015). These examples of communicative appeal prevails in Amal’s speech since the numbers and evidence are especially helpful in her attempt to persuade the audience that education of children is the bright future of the country and gain trust of the listeners.

Similarly to the first speech, in the second one, she refers to pathos talking about the soldiers who died in Yemen. The politician says, “These men died with pride, courage and in defense of the Arab land, which reaffirms the meaning of sacrifice as a trait for Arabs and Emirati.” The technique enables Dr. Amal to capture attention of the listeners. Besides, in such a way, she establishes contact with the audience at the spiritual level from the very beginning of the meeting. As for the ethos in her speech, appealing to it could be illustrated with such phrases, “As we embark on a new education journey and academic school year with focus on innovation” and “In order to witness the success we envision for this academic school year” (“Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi,” 2015). Usage of this personal pronoun and evidence spur the audience to trust Dr. Amal. In addition, with the help of such a persuasive technique, she encourages listeners to participate in the implementation of the definite aim and share their experience with other people (Fashiku, 2016). Therefore, apart from fulfilling a function of convincing, ethos, in this case, is destined to call for action and active involvement.

In conclusion, the effectiveness of the public administration is largely dependent on the person’s ability to adopt the means of political communication. The skill allows shaping the political consciousness of citizens, induces them to certain forms of political behavior, and helps to become more politically aware. Proper use of political communication can influence the political process and assist politicians in achieving their goals, as demonstrated by the vivid example of Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi.
